My work is a block down from one of the local urban ponds, and everyday as I drive by, I see a few anglers working the water from lawn chairs. My wife and daughter have started the wonderful tradition of coming down for a picnic once a week, and after my wife’s prompting (it truly was not my idea), I brought along the fly rod. Not much is happening at mid day on these cement bottomed ponds, but here the little girl and I talked about fly selection and she critiqued my cast. There was time for a little midday siesta before I gave them each a kiss and headed back to work. If only every day was picnic day.

So, what are these armchair anglers fishing for? I guess I’m just curious what you might find in a concrete pond in Arizona?
There are bluegill, carp, and catfish (bass too if I’m not mistaken). The stocking truck shows up in the wintertime and puts some hatchery trout in there as well. The park itself is brand new and pretty awesome. It’s going to be a great spot for my daughter to come and take advantage of the playground and pond.

I think I would like my job better if I could wear a hat to work and meet my girls for a picnic at the concrete fishing hole.
Looks like a great recipe for quality time and who knows, you may even catch a big fish one of these times. Listen to the ladies, they seem to have a feel for these things.
