Arizona Fly Fishing: Winter Scouting

Posted on February 13, 2012 by azwanderings
Mogollon Rim Country
Mogollon Rim Country

It’s been a while since I picked up a fly rod, as hunting, teaching, and tying flies have been keeping me busy. I headed north with my good friend, Antonio on Saturday to see how the Rim country was looking. After checking some of the local forums, it appeared that everyone was going to be headed north to fish the creeks, so instead of rushing to be the first there, we did a bit of scouting in the morning and looked at a couple of different spots that we both had been interested to see. Around noon, we finally made it to some fishable water, but the bite was pretty slow by then. Antonio brought a couple of fish to hand, while I had a couple come unbuttoned at the net.

Although the weather was beautiful for February, it was a little bit disheartening to see absolutely no snow on the ground. Without some snow and water in the highcountry, I have some concerns about the summer and fall flows for this year, but I guess we still have a little bit of time for some precipitation. At the end of it all, it was a beautiful day in Arizona.

Gorgeous little stream! A ‘go-back-to’ for sure, I’d say!

Maybe some of what we got last night will wander over your way.

    Ben,

Beautiful stream images, and I’m glad you were able to get out on the water. I share your concerns about the light snowpack this year, and hopefully the latter half of February and on into March will feature more significant precipitation…

Beautiful small water. Good luck with the snowpack. I hope it comes for you.

Fine backcountry photos. I just posted Mogollon Mtn. pics and story on my Rivertop Rambles from those arid months last summer. Hoping all of us receive more snow!

Thanks all. It is a beautiful little spot, but it gets does get a good bit of abuse, plus this light snow pack doesn’t help. Here’ hoping we get some precipitation…

Ben glad to see you made it up to the rim, are you scouting any specific species. I am planning on getting up there in two weeks to do some creek fishing, maybe we will cross paths one of these weekends. They did get some Valentines day snow.

Thanks Marc. We’ll have to make it a point to get out together one of these days. I’m excited for summer, not only because I’ll be out of school, but for the fish to start looking up and getting hungry. Nice to hear that we got a bit of snow. Thanks again.

Looks like a good time. I’ve been a slacker and not following my favorite sites. Thanks for the good reading material.
