Fly Fishing Pyramid Lake – Day 2

Posted on April 18, 2013 by azwanderings
1 - Early Morning Fish
Pyramid Lake Lahontan Cutthroat

Day 2 of fly fishing Pyramid Lake came very early. Based on what we had seen and experienced the first day, we headed out really early to get a spot on the beach. Ultimately, we found ourselves in the center of the action and began hooking up at first light. We found that during our time at Pyramid, stripping flies on heavy sinking lines was the ticket for consistant action. Fly fishing Pyramid Lake was unlike anything I had ever done before. I had worried on the way up that my small-stream-ADD-mentality would make the monotony of lake fishing unbearable, but hooking up on big, hard fighting Lahontan cutthroats was extremely rewarding.

We were able to hold some very respectable fish and left the water happy and satisfied.

Wow, man…it just gets better and better. Are all of those pics from your camera? They’re amazing! Does Michelle know that “her” camera isn’t “hers” anymore? 😉

Thanks Zach. Wait till day 3. That’s when I pulled a couple of really nice fish. Shhh. Don’t tell Michelle. God forbid that camera ends up in the water one of these days.

It’s definitely worth it. I’m planning on heading up again next year. I think it will become an annual pilgrimage.

Kyle, I agree. I think half the reason our trip was a success was because of the guys that we had there. Definitely my biggest trout too. Here’s to landing a ten pounder next time.

Ben, sure have enjoyed the anticipation of your Pyramid posts, and, now seeing and reading about the finished product. Magnificent fish and awesome pictures. What a great experience for you and your buddies.

Thanks Mel for the kind words. I still have day 3 to post and we caught some nice fish on that last day. It’s been fun to look back and write about the trip but it’s been tough too because I just want to leave work and drive back up there. Next year for sure.

I hear ya Ben. It’s a good thing I don’t live in Reno…I’d probably be unemployed, a dead-beat and fishing Pyramid all winter.

Agreed. But I can think of other things worse than being a troutbum on Pyramid.

Thanks Howard. I don’t know how much of a secret Pyramid is based on the number of ladders set up on the beach. It is a heck of a long way from Phoenix though.

    Ben,

Great posts and beautiful fish–I particularly like the one male cutt with brilliant red gill plates and sides. It looks like you guys had a heck of a trip, I look forward to your third post!

Hmm, I might need to think about making a trip to Pyramid myself one of these springs…

    Thanks, Iain

Thanks Iain. There were some very nice fish to the net. I would highly recommend a trip. It’s well worth it.
