I recently made a new addition to my hunting and fishing pack – A Rite in the Rain Journal. This blog has been an amazing tool for me to look back and reminisce about where I have fished and hunted. On occasion it has even helped me decide where I would be fishing on a particular weekend. Although the pictures and words remind me a bit about how the day went, it sometimes falls short for a detailed description. I picked up a “Rite in the Rain” Journal to use while in the field in hopes of recording temperatures, weather conditions, hatches, flies that worked, fish that were caught, and all the nitty-gritty that sometimes can get lost from the field to the blog. Here’s to hoping that I can stay consistant and up to date on the new journal.
Does any one else do something similar?
Exact same, in fact! I’ve tried to be more scientific in my notes this year….but scribbles go in, too. Definitely a good thing to carry!
Very cool Erin. I’m interested in seeing how mine looks after a year or two.

have one. never really used it as a fishing log. I’m really terrible about that kind of thing. and really, if yer going to record all that data about places you fish, shouldn’t we be measuring water depth and approximating flow numbers?
it’s a great product though. I kept one this summer on the grand canyon for nineteen daze.
I’m rather glad to have it.
I usually good about taking pictures and documenting the overall experience, but I’d like to starting jotting down some of the details. I think it will help in years to come. That ferry trip sounded like fun.

I have tried to keep a journal but usually fail quite miserably. It’s extremely useful for details when looking back, I’m just usually caught up in the excitement of each trip and forget to record everything. I need to get better at that.
I hear you. I hope that this journal is going to become a habit. Best of luck with yours.

I’ve been able to maintain a Journal fairly consistently since 1970, and now, at a fairly old age, I find it useful to look back now and then and see how I’ve been able to forge a “career” as an outdoor writer through that maintainance. I agree that the outdoor journal is a very useful tool and highly recommend its use by people sensitive to the world in which we live.
Walt,
That is really cool and inspiring. I am hoping that I can do something similar as I too believe that these notes will be invaluable. Thanks for sharing and being an inspiration.

Ben,
I recently picked up one of these. It’s a little more structured than the Rite in the Rain journals, but also has room for free form notes. It might be an acceptable alternative to what you’re looking for.

Very cool Mike. That journal looks pretty cool. I might have to check one of them out.Thanks.

This is great….I’ve been wanting to find something similar, especially since I’m just starting out on the fly fishing adventure that I hope to be on for the rest of my life…I would love down the road to have something like ^Walt^ where I could look back over 40+ years of fishing notes…
I hear you Zach. I’m a little jealous of all of Walt’s written notes. It definitely is inspiring and I think I’m going to try and stay with it.

I recently just started doing the same thing for both fishing and bow hunting. It comes in handy recording what presentations worked for fishing and what the exact weather conditions/locations were. It’s also neat to look back and remember the specific trips and outings. Years later it’ll be a neat thing to look back on.
Thanks for the comment Alex. I agree and am looking forward to filling it full of good info.
