Oak Creek
Wandering Arizona – Photo credit to Alex Landeen

I like standing knee deep in a small stream casting flies to rising trout. I like toting a shotgun over the hills in search of quail. I like staring through binoculars in search of Arizona big game. I haphazardly take photos and write to try and share about my time in the field.

Hi Ben. I’m coming to AZ (Sedona) for a week in Oct and plan on some fly fishing. I can’t believe the similarities between us. I grew up around Albany NY, Kinderhook actually, I spent years backpacking and trout fishing in the Adirondacks and Catskills. Like you, I’m an ardent fisherman, bow hunter and turkey talker (got a nice one this spring, and talked two in for a grandfather and his grandson – a first for all three of us!)). I moved to PA 25 years ago and have fished and hunted both states extensively. Well, I just wanted to say hi and tell you I appreciate your blog. Good luck with the deer and tight lines!

    Bob –

Thank you very much for the kind words. If you are looking for some company when you come out and I have the weekend free, I would love to fish with you. Oak Creek in the fall is pretty spectacular. I love Arizona but their are times when I am jealous of all those back east who have a stream or two minutes from their door. Congrats on the turkey trifecta. That is a pretty cool experience. Again, give me a heads up when your coming out if you are interested in meeting up. Good luck and tight lines.

Sorry for the late reply. I’m coming Sunday, Oct 3rd. Will stay around Oak Creek until Wed, the 13th, then taking the train up to the Grand Canyon.
I’m flying back to Pittsburgh on Sunday.
If we can get together, It would be great. even if we cannot get together, send me an email and I’ll give you my cell phone number. Maybe we can get you back next summer to fish some of the PA limestoners.
Again, I apologize for not getting back sooner.

        Bob,

Wish I had heard from you sooner. I’ve got a trip planned over that weekend to the Rim. Next time you are coming out this way, give me a heads up and we’ll hit some water. Let me know how you did up there at Oak Creek and I will take you up on your offer for some PA firsthand knowledge. Good luck.

Ben – I found your blog through Troutrageous, who seems to know ALL the great sites! I, too, am a displaced PA’er (grew up in Lebanon, still have a camp on Kettle Ck) I’m a small stream fanatic who lives in the middle-of-nowhere as far as trout are concerned – Chicago area.

I’ll be following your adventures. If you get a minute, stop by my site and let me know what you think

    Hey Ben,
This Eric from hookedupfilms.com. I just found out from the activities coordinator (the wife) that we may be in Mesa for Thanksgiving. Any chance that we could hook up for a day of fishing? I would love to bring some of the video gear and shoot some AZWanderings footage. Let me know.

I would definitely be down for that. Sounds great. I was already thinking of fishing Saturday and Sunday. Shoot me an email at benjaminsmith835@gmail.com and we’ll figure something out. Love the idea.

    Ben,
Thanks for stopping by my blog & leaving a note. I really enjoy your blog. I especially enjoy seeing some photos from a warmer spot in the country because, as you know, January in the Adirondacks can give you the “cabin crusties” no matter how much time one spends ice fishing. When you get back to the Adirodacks, contact me & we can fish a bushwack into some brookie pond.

Done deal Chris. I do love the Adirondacks, but even after years of snowboarding, I don’t miss all that snow and biting wind. What I do miss are streams and ponds teaming with hungry brook trout. I will definitely catch up with you when I get back there. Thanks for the kind words.

Good job on this blog. It clean and informative. Thanks for sharing your Javelina hunt experience. I will be leaving tomorrow for my 3rd hunt for those little buggers. Maybe I will finally get lucky this year.
    Take care. Keep writing.

Thanks man. You really should think about the fly rod. You’re life will never be the same. Glad to hear you’re still fishing. I would really enjoy getting together this summer. Living in Arizona now makes me appreciate what we had there in Schroon Lake. Thanks again Chad. See you this summer.

Hi Ben! I am Jimbob, Josh and Mandie’s mom in case you don’t remember. I couldn’t believe it when I saw you live in Arizona now! I lived there as a little girl in Phoenix, right at the base of South Mountain. I loved it! My husband and I are still praying about moving there some day. He is a native Adirondacker but he did get the opportunity to see Arizona about 6 years ago and he loved the area too. Before moving here to New York, my mom, dad and I use to drive up to Roosevelt Lake. After mom passed away, dad, one of my friend’s, and I would camp there for a weekend. Can’t think of a better place to live! Hope you are doing well!

    John,

There is some great dove hunting here in Arizona. I am a little partial to quail hunting as it gets me out walking around and I prefer the taste of quail to dove. I usually get out a handful of times for dove each season.
