New Mexico Antelope
New Mexico Antelope

My good buddy, Austin, had a great hunt in New Mexico and bagged this really nice antelope buck. Really half the credit goes to me. Without the Arizona Wanderings shirt and the good mojo that it brought along, who knows how this hunt would have ended up. In all seriousness, Austin is a phenomenal hunter who has so many great success stories from the field. Luckily, he lets me tag along and learn a thing or two. Congrats man on a great looking buck and a big thanks for representing Arizona Wanderings.

Don’t forget that Arizona Wanderings T-shirts are on sale for $15 right now. Make sure to swing on over to the shop and pick one up.

Fly Fishing Arizona: A Tilapia Filled Morning

I had the opportunity to pick up the fly rod over the Labor Day weekend and chase some fish at a few of the urban ponds around Phoenix. I learned my lesson last year, and decided that on Memorial and Labor Day weekends I should avoid the high country. The roads up there become parking lots and there are people everywhere. So, I met up with a few buddies at first light in search of some warm water fish. Things started very slow until we switched up ponds and found what must have been recently stocked tilapia. The fish were podded up and actively taking bugs off the surface.

We were able to pull a couple of nice fish in by using parachute Adams and even a “bread” foam fly that my friend Jason showed me. We switched it up a bit and went searching for some carp but the water is up about a foot and all the old reefs and hangouts are no where to be found.  By 8:30 the sun was getting pretty warm and we called it quits. I really cannot wait for the triple digit heat to leave town.

Splashything Stonefly
Splashything Stonefly

On another exciting note, the Arizona Wanderings shop is seeing a new addition to the fly shop. After some quality time up on the Deschutes this summer and many different inquiries from readers, the Splashything Stonefly makes an appearance in the lineup.

The Splashything Stonefly pattern was created for a trip taken to the Deschutes River in Oregon when the salmonfly and golden stonefly hatches were at their peak. The Splashything Stonefly is a high-floating, buggy pattern tied on a #6 hook. Sold in a 3 pack.

Definitely make sure to have a few Splashything Stoneflies in your box for the next time those big bugs are in the bushes and on the water.

I am hoping to add some more patterns over the next couple of months. I am looking to introduce a San Juan collection that will feature a half dozen or so great patterns for that river. Also on the docket is another ebook which, all I will say, focuses on fly fishing. (Having put it in writing, let’s hope I get this thing finished up.)

What to get the Outdoorsman for Christmas…

I know it is a little early in the year to be thinking about this, but in a couple of months, everyone is going to be scrambling and trying to get those last minute items for Christmas. Shopping for the outdoorsman, wether a fisherman, hunter, hiker, biker or whatever, can be very difficult because usually those are the type of people who are very specific about their gear, which can make shopping for them a hit or miss operation. I may have the answer.

Gift giving is an important part of the modern Christmas experience but it can create holiday stress, and thus you want to take steps each year to ensure that you have the best Christmas shopping experience possible. December can be a harried time for the unwary shopper, as malls fill up, lines are long, and impulse buying is harder to avoid. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to make the whole Christmas shopping experience go much more smoothly. Here are some great holiday shopping tricks and tips to get you started.

Don’t wait until the last minute. One of the best Christmas Shopping tips is to start early. Not only can this help alleviate your stress level, but it will probably save you both time and money. If you’re feeling generous and can’t wait until your next paycheck, you can start shopping now and just avail of short term loans. Citrus North payday company can help.  Shopping early can help you avoid crowds and long lines, allows you to look for the best deals, and gives you time to actually sit back and enjoy the holiday season.
Make a Christmas list. An organized list is key to a stress-free holiday shopping experience. Get your list done early, so you know exactly what you need to buy and what deals to keep a lookout for. Make sure your list is accompanied by a detailed budget, and stick to it. This will help you avoid all those unwelcome inflated credit card bills come January.
Shop online. Not only is the Internet convenient, but in many cases it provides some of the best Christmas shopping around. You can choose from a wide array of specialty stores where you can purchase unique gifts that you won’t be able to find at your local mall. This can save you time at the post office as well, since items can often be wrapped and shipped directly to their recipients.

A Canvas Print. Every fisherman and hunter I know has a favorite picture that has some special significance either tucked away for safe keeping or even prominently displayed somewhere in the house. The picture probably captures some iconic moment in their life that whenever they look at it in an album or see it in the hallway, brings back a story that they love to tell. A canvas print is a thoughtful gift that can memorialize that picture.

Original Photo

I recently chose to have one of my favorite pictures done on a canvas print. This particular photo was of the last fish I caught at the San Juan, and although it may not be the biggest or the most colorful fish, the photo is really striking to me and really symbolized the whole trip for me that year. I was impressed with how the photo came out and feel that it really adds to what my wife calls the “hunting room.” I ended up getting a 8X10 and felt that the quality of the photo still looked pretty good even though it had been blown up and put on the canvas. So if you are looking for what to get the fly fisherman or hunter for Christmas or a birthday, check out Easy Canvas Prints.

Dreaming…

Since being bit by the bug of fly fishing, I have been going full tilt with no end in sight. When I am not hunting or being domesticated, most weekends can find me sleeping on the ground and stalking wild trout on the small streams in the mountains of Arizona. I have been blessed to expand my experiences on the Big D in Oregon, chasing grayling in Alaska, driving over to the San Juan in search of big rainbows, and going home to New York to pester native heritage brook trout. Any vacation my wife and I take is inevitably cursed when I pull up google to see if there are any trout streams nearby, and she has stopped rolling her eyes when I tote a fly rod and net through the TSA security screening at the airport.

As great as any fishing trip may be with all of its big fish, sceneries, and pictures, ultimately leaves you wanting more. Like an addict, before I am home an unpacked, my mind is racing to figure out how I can get a few more days to string up a fly rod in some new location. I guess what I am trying to say is that I have problem. A problem that I can live with and one that I will continue to nurture and grow.

While I am being honest, I will let you in on the grand scheme rolling around in my brain. With the summers free to roam about, I have been thinking about heading north. North of me are the great waters of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. I could easily take two months and get lost in the many blue lines that zig-zag across those states. Life is full of possibilities when you are looking out of a bug spattered windshield heading towards moving water.

Road Tripping...
Road Tripping...

Colorado greenbacks have been calling my name for quite a while now and I imagine that the Rocky Mountain National Park is more beautiful in person, rather than the pictures that I drool over on other sites. Yellowstone and the Tetons is where I “re-discovered” my passion for fishing, with a bubble and a fly. So, two weeks camping at the base of those beautiful jagged mountains and getting serious about fishing would suit me just fine. Montana and Idaho are a bit of a mystery to me still. When I hear the names of those big rivers and see the fish that come out of the waters there, it is almost a bit surreal. Like a far away land enshrouded in mist, I long to get there and explore the famous waters that I have heard (and seen) so much about.

The thing is, this trip is going to happen. It may not be next summer or even the summer after, but it will happen. And even though I talk and plan about fishing these famous places and rivers, what will inevitably happen is that I will hear or read about some small, trickle of a stream back in the middle of nowhere, and instead of fishing the big waters in search of big fish, I will be happily stalking along a small stream under a big western sky searching for those smaller fish eager to attack a dry fly. That is ok. I think I am a small stream guy at heart…
